Thomas Hoyne

Between boyhood summers spent in Maine, at a camp in Bay Harbor, and at his grandmother's cottage in Ogunquit, Thomas M. Hoyne III gained interest in the great fishing schooners at an early age. A resident of Winnetka, Illinois as a child, Hoyne attended the University of Illinois and Northwestern University, then served four years in the Navy, in the South Pacific, during and after World War II. Many hours standing watch deepened his knowledge of the power of the sea. For 35 years, Hoyne worked with top ad agencies and corporations, here, and abroad. He gradually switched from commercial to fine art, painting what he chose- marine subjects - and eventually became a fellow in the American Society of Marine Artists. Mr. Hoyne passed away in 1989 at the age of 65, but his work can be found in private, corporate, and museum collections throughout the world. In 1989, the Mystic Maritime Gallery established an annual award in his name, given to the artist whose work best documents as aspect of the marine fisheries industry of yesterday or today. Below you will see several of Mr. Hoyne's works, proudly offered by By The Bay.
